Internal control and risk management at the Finnish Red Cross

Internal control and risk management help to ensure that the Finnish Red Cross’s activities are effective, responsible and in line with its objectives. They support the proper use of funds, good governance and our ability to identify and manage operational risks.
Internal control is an integral part of management and operations at the Finnish Red Cross. Internal control ensures that our operations meet the objectives set for them and comply with the law, as well as the organisation’s rules and principles, and that the information produced regarding our operations and finances is reliable.
In practice, internal control is implemented through various control procedures designed to ensure things such as the appropriate use of the organisation’s funds for aid activities, compliance with the principles of good governance, and clear procedures for addressing and rectifying any irregularities.
We regularly assess and monitor the risks associated with our operations to ensure that our internal control measures are focused on the most important issues. All those involved in the organisation participate in their respective roles in internal control practices, the identification of irregularities and risk management. Cooperation and communication support effective risk management.
The organisation also has an internal auditor who assesses the effectiveness of internal control and risk management. We are constantly developing our risk management on the basis of audit findings, changes in the operational environment, and the experience and lessons learnt from our operations.
