Week Against Racism in schools

Week Against Racism will once again take place on 16-22 March. This year, the theme of the week is safety.

Racism occurs in many forms in the lives of children, both in and outside of the school. Racism is not only insults and bullying, but also something more subtle: different attitudes, prejudices and exclusionary practices.

All forms of racism have an impact on the growth of children and young people and on their opportunities to move forward in life. It is important to identify racism in everyday life, to be aware of prejudices and to take action to dismantle discriminatory practices.

The morning assembly discusses racism in the everyday lives of children and young people

We are once again producing the national morning assembly for the Week against racism. The video can be seen from here, and it can be viewed at school or, for example, in a hobby group at a time that suits you best.

This year’s morning assembly focuses on the kinds of racism children and young people encounter in their daily lives – and why it is important to always intervene. The speakers also offer simple, practical tips on how each of us – children, young people, and adults – can act when facing racism.

Participating in the discussion are school pupil Harri, upper secondary school student Vida Amoah, football referee Mohammad Al-Emara, and the spouse of the President of the Republic, Suzanne Innes-Stubb.

We will also hear greetings from Yle Mix, runner Mustafe Muuse and well-known ice hockey players. Welcome to join us!

The morning assembly includes subtitles in Swedish and English and lasts about 10 minutes.

Watch the video from here!

Identify and act navigator for young people

How would you feel if someone you did not know were to yell at you and your young child in a shopping centre? Or if you constantly had to explain why you look the way you do?

How would you want others to act in these situations?

Using the Identify and Act navigator for young people, you can test out how you would act in these scenarios. The guiding examples are real experiences of racism.

Go to the navigator.

Learning materials for younger and older pupils

Is it easy to be accepted into our group? What kind of joking around doesn't feel good? Do we intervene in racism? These issues are discussed in the updated ‘Together against racism’ learning materials.

You can make use of the learning materials during the Week Against Racism or at any time when there is a need to discuss the issue with the class. All learning materials for the theme week can be found here.

Other materials for the week

You can download the Week Against Racism campaign photos for your use here and use them, for example, in the school's info TV or other communication channels.

Other free theme week materials (e.g. stickers) can be ordered from the Red Cross shop. The materials can be ordered about a month before the anti-racism week as long as supplies last.
