The Oulu and Lapland districts of the Finnish Red Cross support authorities in meeting the basic needs of people arriving in Finland via the Vartius and Salla border crossing points.

The Red Cross is present at the Vartius and Salla border crossing points at the request of the Finnish Border Guard.

At the Vartius border crossing point, volunteers and an employee of the Oulu district of the Red Cross offer first aid to people crossing the border as needed. In Salla, volunteers of the Voluntary Rescue Service, which is coordinated by the Red Cross, offer food to those arriving at the border. Volunteers of the Lapland district of the Red Cross are also prepared to provide first aid in Salla as needed.

Preparing for various exceptional situations is part of the Red Cross’s basic activities. We constantly monitor the situation and are prepared to support authorities in meeting people’s basic needs. The Finnish Immigration Service is responsible for processing and deciding on any asylum applications.
