Hundreds of thousands of people need immediate help and health services in Myanmar, where political tensions are causing violence and unrest. You can donate to the collection in many ways.

You may see Finnish Red Cross volunteers on the streets and in shops with collection boxes from 9 to 16 June. They help collect funds for the operation of the Myanmar Red Cross volunteers. Violent unrest, the coronavirus pandemic and increasing poverty in Myanmar have caused the need for international emergency aid.

Red Cross volunteers in Myanmar help e.g. with ambulance transport and at first aid points all over the country. The donations also go towards free-of-charge clinics in communities whose residents do not have access to health care.

The spread of COVID-19 has caused serious economic difficulties in Myanmar. Thousands of people have lost their jobs and income. At the same time, the prices of basic supplies are rising. Many people do not have access to basic services, such as public health care. People living in the poorest urban areas are most vulnerable.

The Myanmar Red Cross is the largest and one of the only humanitarian operators with access to communities in need of help. The Red Cross is distributing food aid and cash grants. Cash can be used to buy basic supplies and support the local economy.

The principles of the operation of the Red Cross are humanity, neutrality and independence.

The Red Cross is preparing for a prolonged crisis

  • The objective of the International Red Cross’s Myanmar emergency appeal is to meet the humanitarian needs of 236,000 people over the course of ten months.
  • More than 2,000 volunteers trained by the Myanmar Red Cross are helping at first aid points across the country. More than 3,000 people have already received help since February.
  • The Red Cross is preparing for a prolonged crisis by increasing immediate and long-term help in Myanmar.
  • Over the coming months, the Myanmar Red Cross will strengthen its first aid and basic health care services and alleviate the increasing food shortage and poverty of families by supporting livelihoods, for example.
  • To prepare for the coming monsoon season, aid supplies will be placed in areas where cyclones and floods are expected. In 2000–2019, Myanmar was one of three countries most affected by extreme weather phenomena.

The Finnish Red Cross has conducted long-term aid work in Myanmar to improve the health and preparedness of communities with the help of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, the European Union and donors. The aid is currently focused on preventing COVID-19.
