Hunger Day box collection yielded 710 000 euros – donations help people in need in Finland and around the world

The Hunger Day box collection yielded approximately 710,000 euros in donations for the Finnish Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The donations are used to help those affected by crises and disasters in Finland and around the world. You can donate to the Hunger Day collection until 13 October.
The Hunger Day box collection was held from Thursday to Saturday on 25–27 September. During this period, Red Cross volunteers also organised Hunger Day events, and collectors all over Finland took part in the box collection. The box collection raised less money than in the previous year. In 2024, the box collection yielded 760,000 euros.
“We would like to thank every single volunteer and donor who participated in the Hunger Day box collection. In just a few days, we raised approximately 710,000 euros for the Disaster Relief Fund. This is a great result. With the funds raised, we can help people in need both here in Finland and around the world," says Fundraising Director of the Finnish Red Cross Sirpa Solehmainen.
Hunger Day is about collecting donations for the Finnish Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The Red Cross uses the funds of the Fund to provide aid quickly to those affected by disasters or accidents both in Finland and abroad.
“The funds raised on Hunger Day are not earmarked in advance, so they can be used to provide aid quickly when a disaster or crisis occurs," says Solehmainen.
The Disaster Relief Fund helps people in need
In recent weeks, the Finnish Red Cross has used its Disaster Relief Fund to help people in need in humanitarian crises.
In August, the Finnish Red Cross’ Disaster Relief Fund allocated 1 million euros to the Red Cross field hospital in Gaza, and in September, 650,000 euros to an international Red Cross relief operation to support the Afghan Red Crescent's relief work in the earthquake zone.
“Every donation to the Disaster Relief Fund is important so that we can continue to provide humanitarian aid to those affected by crises and disasters. The local Red Cross or Red Crescent that we support plays a key role in the relief work, as their staff and volunteers get the aid to its destination and are often among the first to save lives," says Head of International Emergency Operations Marko Korhonen from the Finnish Red Cross.
The Disaster Relief Fund is used to provide aid in the event of a sudden domestic disaster or disruption
The Finnish Red Cross also uses the Disaster Relief Fund to provide aid in sudden accidents and crises in Finland. This work supports the authorities. For example, the funds can be used to provide basic necessities for those who have lost their homes in a fire, and emotional support to those affected by an accident or crisis.
The Red Cross uses its Disaster Relief Fund to provide aid in sudden accidents or disruptions in Finland more than three times a week on average.
Donations can be made to the annual Hunger Day collection until 13 October. This year, the collection was organised for the 45th time.
