The Finnish Red Cross launches an emergency appeal for funds on March 14. The Finnish Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund needs donations to prepare for helping victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. In addition to Japan, the Disaster Relief Fund is also currently helping victims of the crisis in Libya.

‘The scale of the disaster in Japan is unfolding slowly and the huge need for relief aid is as yet impossible to assess. Through the emergency appeal we have launched today we will make sure we are ready to help when the Japanese Red Cross turns to us,' says Finnish Red Cross Fundraising Manager Tuula Colliander.

The Finnish Red Cross will use the money raised to help the Japanese Red Cross prepare to help people hit by disaster both now and in the future. At present, some 735 doctors, nurses and other aid workers from the Japanese Red Cross are providing relief and assistance in the areas affected by Friday’s earthquake and tsunami. Some 95 Japanese Red Cross disaster relief teams began their work in the worst-hit regions of Japan immediately after the disaster.

The key areas of aid for the Japanese Red Cross are first aid and psychological support, search and rescue, people tracing, along with providing help, food, shelter and clean water for people in need. Among other things, the Japanese Red Cross has handed out 65,000 blankets to evacuees and people who have lost their homes.

Appeal funds needed elsewhere too

Donations to the FRC Disaster Relief Fund are used to help people most in need but not only in Japan. According to information the Red Cross has received, more than 200,000 people have fled the fighting in Libya. The Finnish Red Cross has sent aid workers, tents and other emergency housing materials to the border between Tunisia and Libya with the donation from the Finnish foreign ministry.

‘In addition to Libya we are keeping a close eye on the situation in Côte d’Ivoire, for example. Thanks to donations made to the Disaster Relief Fund we are ready to help there too, as soon as help is needed,' says Colliander.
