The Finnish Red Cross is set to send to aid workers and emergency response units to Nepal.

The Red Cross is ready to send emergency response units and staff from Finland to Nepal. A health care clinic, a logistics unit for transport of aid supplies and a unit for distribution of aid supplies are all ready to be shipped along with the aid workers needed to man the units.

– The units are being prepared and they will be ready within the next few days. This operation is a collaboration with other Red Cross Societies and we are still figuring out exactly who will do what in the sending of these units to Nepal, says Kalle Löövi, Director of International Operations for the Finnish Red Cross.

There are two Finnish aid workers in Nepal at present. They are assisting the Nepal Red Cross Society in their aid and rescue efforts. En route to Kathmandu are an additional three Finnish Red Cross aid workers who will help to assess the aid needs, gather information and coordinate International Red Cross aid efforts. In addition to the Finnish Red Cross, the Danish, Swiss, British, American and Belgian Red Cross Societies have long been involved in Nepal. They will receive support from a further two dozen or so national Red Cross Societies in providing disaster response.

Nepal was struck by a massive earthquake on Saturday morning and it has caused huge devastation. Several strong aftershocks have also occurred during Saturday and Sunday. The Nepal Red Cross Society has been engaged in rescue efforts and discovery work during the weekend. More aid is needed and the Nepal Red Cross Society has sent an appeal for assistance to other Red Cross Societies via the International Red Cross.

Collection to help quake victims

The Red Cross is starting an emergency collection throughout Finland. In the largest cities collection centres are set up to make it easy to pick up collection tins and vests and get involved in the Nepal appeal. Everybody is welcome to become a collector. Even a little while of fundraising is a big help.

The contact information for the collection centres will be available on the Red Cross website punainenristi.fi (in Finnish only). The contact information for our district offices can be found here.
