The plight in Haiti has touched hearts in Finland. In its first week the disaster relief collection of the Finnish Red Cross has generated 1,7 million euro. The need for aid is urgent, as the International Red Cross estimates that up to three million people are in need of help in earthquake-stricken Haiti. The aim of the Finnish Red Cross collection is to raise EUR 2 million.

This aid operation is the biggest by the International Red Cross and the Finnish Red Cross since the tsunami disaster in 2004. The Finnish Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund urgently needs funds in order to make efficient long-term assistance possible in Haiti.

The most eager donors have proved to be ordinary people. Companies have now also become involved and during the first days of this week the Finnish Red Cross are receiving more and more corporate donations.

Several of the FRC local branches have arranged their own local collections in various parts of Finland to help the victims of the quake in Haiti. Reports from all over the country suggest that the FRC collectors have received a very warm welcome from Finns eager to help.

The severe earthquake that hit Haiti on January 13 has laid waste the capital Port-au-Prince. The International Red Cross estimates that about a third of Haiti’s 10 million people are in need of aid.

The Red Cross started helping the people of Haiti immediately after the quake. Right away, the Haitian Red Cross began rescuing people from the rubble. The Finnish Red Cross has sent a mobile clinic to Haiti and cooperated with the German Red Cross to send a field hospital. In addition, Finnish aid workers and relief supplies have been sent to the disaster area.

Haiti will continue to need aid for years to come.
